6 Car Finance Mistakes That Cost You Money

4 August 2026 6 min readPublished by Asset Connect Australia

Mistake 1: arranging finance after choosing the car

By the time you are sitting in the dealership with the keys in sight, your negotiating position is gone. You will take whatever finance is on the desk because the alternative is walking away from the car. Getting an indicative approval sorted first flips this — you shop as a cash-equivalent buyer and the finance is already competitive.

Mistake 2: judging the loan by the weekly repayment

A low weekly figure can hide a long term, a high rate, or a large balloon at the end. The number that matters is the total cost of credit — everything you will pay over the life of the loan. Two loans with the same weekly repayment can differ by thousands in total cost.

Mistake 3: not understanding the balloon payment

A balloon lowers your repayments but leaves a lump sum owing at the end — often tens of thousands. Plenty of borrowers reach the end of the term without a plan for it, and end up refinancing the balloon at whatever rate they can get. Balloons have legitimate uses, especially for business vehicles, but only when the exit is planned from day one. Try our balloon payment calculator to see the trade-off in dollars.

Mistake 4: accepting the first rate you are offered

Car finance rates vary enormously between lenders for the same borrower — the gap between a sharp rate and a convenient one can be several percent. On a $40,000 loan over five years, three percent is roughly $3,500. A licensed broker with a panel of lenders can put your application where it is likely to be priced best; a single finance desk cannot.

Mistake 5: skipping the add-on fine print

Extended warranties, tyre-and-rim cover, loan protection insurance — add-ons offered at signing are frequently financed into the loan, so you pay interest on them for years. Some are worthwhile; many are not. Decide on add-ons separately and deliberately, never as a signature at the bottom of a stack of paper.

Mistake 6: business owners financing the wrong way

A sole trader or company buying a work vehicle has structures available — like a chattel mortgage — that can suit cash flow and tax treatment better than a consumer loan. Getting this wrong is expensive and annoying to unwind. This is squarely a conversation for your accountant and a licensed finance professional together.

The cheap insurance of professional advice

Every mistake above has the same root cause: doing a four-figure-consequence transaction a handful of times in your life, against counterparties who do it every day. An independent licensed professional may help explain the available provider terms; any remuneration or costs should be confirmed before proceeding.

Asset Connect Australia does not lend or arrange finance — we are a referral platform. One enquiry connects you with a licensed broker from our network who can compare lenders for your situation before you set foot in a dealership.
