Plant & Equipment Insurance: What It Covers (and What It Doesn't)

What plant and equipment insurance covers

Plant and equipment insurance (sometimes called mobile plant or contractors' plant cover) protects the machinery and gear your business relies on — excavators, bobcats, generators, compressors, and specialised tools. Depending on the policy, it can cover accidental damage, theft, fire, and loss while the equipment is on site, in transit, or stored. For an earthmoving operator in regional Queensland, this is the cover that keeps a stolen machine from stopping the business.

Mobile plant, transit and hired-in gear

Good policies account for the fact that plant moves. Cover can extend to equipment being transported between sites and, importantly, to gear you hire in — where you are often contractually responsible for damage even though you do not own it. If you regularly rent equipment, confirm hired-in plant liability is addressed, because a damaged hired machine can become your bill.

What it typically does not cover

Standard plant cover usually excludes wear and tear, mechanical or electrical breakdown, gradual deterioration, and damage from lack of maintenance. It is not a warranty. It also may not cover a vehicle that is separately registered and road-going — that often belongs on a commercial motor policy. Reading the exclusions is as important as reading the inclusions.

Getting the sum insured right

Insure equipment for its correct replacement value and keep an up-to-date asset schedule. Underinsuring to trim the premium risks proportional reductions at claim time, while over-insuring wastes money. Review the schedule whenever you buy or sell major gear so a new $80,000 machine is not sitting uninsured on a site.

Match your gear to the right policy

Every trade's equipment mix is different, and policies vary in how they treat transit, storage and hired-in plant.
