How to Choose the Right Finance Broker in Australia (2026 Guide)

Start with the licence, not the pitch

Every legitimate credit provider, broker, or adviser operating in Australia must hold (or be an authorised representative under) an Australian Credit Licence (ACL) issued by ASIC, or an Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL) for financial advice. Before you discuss your situation with anyone, search their name or business on ASIC Connect's professional registers.

If a broker can't tell you their ACL number on the spot, that's a red flag worth walking away from.

Ask how they get paid

Brokers may receive commissions from lenders and may also charge fees, depending on the service and agreement. Ask the broker to explain their remuneration, any fees you may pay, and how the options they present were selected.

Check their panel of lenders

A broker tied to a single lender is really just a salesperson for that lender. Look for brokers or referral services with access to a broad panel — banks, non-bank lenders, and specialist lenders — so the recommendation is based on your situation, not their limited menu.

Where a referral service fits in

Services like Asset Connect Australia don't provide credit assistance or financial advice themselves — instead, we take one enquiry from you and can connect you with an independent broker or adviser from our national network whose experience may be relevant to your industry and goals. The professional determines whether their services suit your circumstances.
